Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may resort to direct primaries if efforts to select a consensus presidential candidate fail ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday evening, where he spoke on the party’s internal strategy for choosing its flagbearer.
According to Atiku, the party’s primary focus is to reach a consensus among its members.
“The first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t work out, then we will go for primary elections,” he said.
He emphasized that the issue is not about stepping aside but about supporting whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
“It is not the issue of stepping aside, but will I support? I will support anybody that emerges,” he added.
The former presidential candidate expressed confidence that the party may not even need to conduct primaries, citing the maturity and understanding among party leaders.
“I don’t think we will get there, because we are all matured politicians,” Atiku stated.
He further noted that party stakeholders are united in their goal to strengthen and protect democracy in Nigeria.
Atiku reaffirmed that members of the ADC are committed to working together in the interest of the country, stressing that unity within the party is key to achieving its objectives in the 2027 general elections.
