The convention is being organised by a faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party.
Chairman of the PDP in Edo State and leader of the Forum of PDP State Chairmen, Tony Aziegbemi, opposed the convention, citing a pending case before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He warned that proceeding with the exercise would amount to a disregard for the rule of law and urged party members to boycott it, alleging that the delegate list may not align with that of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Similarly, the PDP chapter in Sokoto State announced it would not participate, with its spokesman, Hassan Sanyinawal, stating that the chapter would remain neutral in the leadership dispute.
However, other state chapters, including Kwara State and Kebbi State, confirmed their participation. The Kwara PDP Chairman, Isa Bawa, said stakeholders resolved to attend after deliberations, while Kebbi’s Secretary, Abubakar Kalgo, noted that delegates had been mobilised.
The Osun State chapter also indicated willingness to participate, according to its Chairman, Sunday Bisi.
About 2,500 delegates are expected at the convention, scheduled to hold at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where the party plans to affirm members of its National Working Committee, including Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and Acting National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
Despite the divisions, Wike expressed optimism about reconciliation efforts after the convention, noting that internal disagreements are common in large political parties.
However, the crisis appears deepened, as key stakeholders aligned with another faction, including Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, as well as Board of Trustees Chairman Adolphus Wabara, are reportedly not expected to attend.
