Kwankwaso Set to Join ADC Amid Ongoing Political Realignments

National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with a formal declaration expected in Kano on Monday.

Sources within both parties revealed that the former Kano State governor would be received by ADC’s National Chairman, David Mark, and National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.

Kwankwaso is also expected to join the party alongside former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, who recently resigned from his position.

The move follows months of negotiations between the ADC and Kwankwaso, during which discussions reportedly included a possible vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers say the development is part of broader realignments involving key figures such as Peter Obi and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is believed to be supporting a potential opposition alliance.

The talks intensified after Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, defected from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), altering the political landscape in the state.

Meanwhile, the APC has downplayed the significance of Kwankwaso’s planned defection. The party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, stated that the former governor does not pose a threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He maintained that Kwankwaso lacks the political structure to challenge the ruling party, noting that democracy allows individuals to freely choose their political platforms.

The anticipated defection is expected to draw significant attention, with supporters reportedly mobilizing for a large turnout at the declaration event.
