Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, Umar Ardo, has expressed confidence that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, will emerge victorious in the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if he decides to contest.
Ardo made the assertion while speaking on a programme aired on African Independent Television (AIT), noting that his position was based on an analysis of possible scenarios ahead of the party’s primary election.
He explained that while discussions around a consensus candidate may arise, such an arrangement would require key contenders, including Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, to step down—an outcome he described as unlikely.
According to him, consensus can only work if major aspirants willingly relinquish their ambitions, a move he said may face resistance from supporters, particularly those of Obi, popularly known as the “Obidient Movement.”
Ardo added that although Atiku’s supporters might accept a consensus arrangement, the former Vice President himself is unlikely to withdraw from the race.
He maintained that if all aspirants contest the primary, Atiku has a clear advantage and would win regardless of whether the process is conducted through direct primaries or by delegates.
The comments come amid ongoing political realignments and consultations within the party, as stakeholders continue to deliberate on strategies ahead of future elections.
