“I Can Pray, Not Command the President” — Adeboye Speaks on Nigeria’s Security Crisis

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has broken his silence on the worsening insecurity and increasing cases of kidnapping across Nigeria, stating that while he can pray and offer counsel, he does not have the authority to command the President or dictate government policies.

Pastor Adeboye made the remarks while addressing members of his congregation during a church service, amid growing concerns over persistent security challenges confronting the country.

Responding to allegations that he had remained silent on critical national issues, the respected cleric dismissed the claims, insisting that he has consistently expressed concern over the state of the nation and has never ceased praying for peace, security, and progress in Nigeria.

According to him, spiritual leaders have a responsibility to speak when necessary, but governance and the implementation of security policies remain the responsibility of those elected to lead the country.

“I can pray for the nation, I can advise when necessary, but I cannot command the President,” Adeboye said while addressing the congregation.

The RCCG leader further recalled his intervention during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, revealing that he personally met with the former President after publicly calling on security agencies to tackle insecurity within a specified period.

Adeboye explained that despite the ultimatum and subsequent engagement with the authorities, the security situation did not improve as expected after the deadline elapsed.

Reflecting on the current security crisis, the cleric advised the present administration to intensify efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes threatening the nation's stability.

He stressed that government action should not be limited to apprehending or eliminating criminal elements alone but should also target those sponsoring and financing acts of terrorism and insecurity across the country.

According to him, lasting peace can only be achieved when those providing financial, logistical, and political support to criminal groups are identified and brought to justice, regardless of their status or influence in society.

Pastor Adeboye reiterated the need for sincere leadership, effective security strategies, and collective national commitment to ending insecurity, while urging Nigerians not to lose hope despite the challenges facing the nation.

He also called on citizens to continue praying for the country and supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace, unity, and development across Nigeria.
