NUT Directs Oyo Teachers to Withdraw Services Over Abducted Colleagues and Students

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to withdraw their services indefinitely beginning from Monday, June 1, 2026.

In a circular dated May 31, 2026, and signed by the State Secretary, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, the union said the action followed a directive from the national leadership of the NUT in response to the continued abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to the union, the decision was necessitated by the prolonged captivity of their colleagues and learners, with no clear indication of their rescue or release. The situation, NUT noted, has created fear, anxiety and uncertainty among teachers, parents and communities across the state.

The union explained that the withdrawal of services is aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe and immediate release of the abducted victims.

NUT further urged all affected teachers to comply fully with the directive, remain law-abiding and stay safe in their homes while engagements with the government continue.

The union also expressed solidarity with the abducted teachers, students and their families, assuring them that every lawful effort is being pursued to ensure their safe return.

The development comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Oyo State, particularly following the recent kidnapping of students and teachers, which has generated widespread public outcry and calls for urgent government intervention.
