FCT Police Deny Shooting at NURTW Headquarters, Arrest Seven Suspects

The FCT Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading viral videos alleging police involvement in a shooting at the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headquarters in Garki II, Abuja.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said officers only intervened to restore order following a distress call received around 7:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026.

According to her, about 300 individuals armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows had stormed the union’s secretariat along Sapele Street, attempting to remove items from the premises.

She explained that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Isyaku Sharu, led a response team to the scene, where it was discovered that the group was trying to enforce a court order without the presence of authorised court officials.

The situation escalated into a clash when other NURTW members resisted the move, resulting in one person sustaining severe machete injuries, while several others were treated for varying degrees of injuries.

Adeh confirmed that seven suspects, including Sulaiman A. Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi, and Ibikunle T. Baruwa, were arrested at the scene and have been charged before a Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2.

The command added that normalcy has since been restored to the area, urging the public to disregard misleading reports aimed at inciting panic.
