FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday for Workers’ Day Celebration

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government. In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion.

Tunji-Ojo commended workers across the country for their dedication and contributions to national development, noting that their efforts remain crucial to Nigeria’s growth and prosperity.

“The Federal Government has declared Friday, 1st May 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers’ Day,” the statement read. “The Minister congratulates workers across the country and appreciates their hard work and commitment to nation-building.”

He further urged workers to continue upholding the values of patriotism, productivity, and diligence in their respective roles.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, enhancing security, and creating an enabling environment for economic growth.

While wishing Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling celebration, he encouraged citizens to remain law-abiding and to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and collective responsibility in nation-building.
